DIY Inflation
Preface
This is my first time posting a DIY guide, so please bear with me. If its hard to follow or you don't understand a step, please keep reading to see if it becomes more clear or check the photos for guidance. I will update this guide from time to time based on user input, so feel free to send me your feed back. I should also mention that I am not a medical professional and cannot be made responsible for injuries or other harm resulting from following the advice or information found on this blog or any web sites it links to.**
Please take your time. This device will take a few days(including curing times) to construct. Your overall success will greatly depend on your ability to follow instructions, make precise cuts, and properly aligning parts. It's highly recommended you read the entire guide before starting.
Materials:
- Aquarium safe silicone
- Medela Medium Flow Nipple(does not have to be medium flow)
- Evenflo Bebek Nipple (only available on eBay, discontinued by manufacturer)
- Sports ball pump with needle (I use an EZ Squeeze Sports Ball Pump)
- Sharp knife or razor blade
- scissors
- plastic spoon
- thick needle
Methods:
Step 1:
Make sure you have the right materials. In the photo below you will see two nipples. The one on the left is the Evenflo Bebek Nipple, it will become the outer nipple or gripper. The nipple on the right is the Medela Medium Flow Nipple, and it will become the inner nipple that is filled with silicone. If your nipples do not look like these, you might have the wrong ones, so look carefully.
Step 2:
Take the Evenflo Bebek Nipple and make the following cuts. First, cut off the very tip of the nipple, right across the widest portion of the tip of the nipple. Then with a pare of scissors cut the bottom ring of the nipple, being careful to only cut the ring portion without cutting into the cupped portion of the nipple. If you feel inside the cupped portion of the nipple with a finger you will feel a ridge. The next cut we will make will be to remove this ridge, while removing as little excess as possible. Once done, there should be a ridge on the outside of the nipple, but not one on the inside. To make this cut easier, I have found it best to turn the nipple inside out, place it over a cylinder of equal or larger diameter, and cut along the ridge with a razor blade angled downward and cut away from the rest of the nipple. The cuts in this step should reflect the cuts made in the photo below.
Step 3:
For this step we will make the cuts needed for the Medela Medium Flow Nipple. Just like in Step 2, we will make a cut around the bottom ring of the nipple. Once again being careful to only remove the ring, and not cut into the side of the nipple. Its ok if this cut is a little jagged as we will be adding silicone over it in one of the last steps. It is however important not to cut into the cupped portion of the nipple as this will shorten the inner nipple. cutting down through only the ring portion will insure we keep as much height as possible.
Step 2b: (optional stopping point)
If you so chose you can stop here. This is the end for making the simpler version of this device. It works just the same, its just not quite as compact. Simply fill all of the Medela Nipple, excluding the tip, with silicone. let it cure for at least 36 hours. Then invert the Evenflo Nipple and force the tip of the Medela Nipple through the tip of the EvenFlo Nipple. Fold the tip of the Evenflo Nipple over itself, and then you are pretty much done. All you need to do now is make the pilot hole fof the pump needle. Force a thick needle into the cured silicone, through the tip of the Medela Nipple and out the bottom. This simply creates a pilot hole for the sports ball pump needle to insert. The photo below shows how to correctly configure the two nipples together.

In the following link you will find an instructional video on how to put on this device, be warned it does contain nudity and is NSFW.
The following steps continue the DIY guide for the inflation device shown at the top of this post.
Step 3:
In this step you are going to remove the tip of the Medela nipple. This will be a turning point that will not let you go back to Step 2b, so be prepared. It is a fairly straight forward cut, but I suggest you look carefully at the photo to see precisely where the cut is made. If you look closely at this nipple you will see four ridges on its tip, all of which are parallel to one another. If you look even closer at the ridges you will notice that there is a very faint bevel/wave/line in the silicon that forms a ring/circle which connects the base of all of the parallel ridges , this is the line at which you should cut, and absolutely no lower. its a very important cut, as making it too high or too low effects how the device will fit.
I will also add here that I believe this cut could be made different to better fit different skin thicknesses. And that, it is something I would recommend anyone who is interested to test out. It will affect how tight the top gripped nipple grips the foreskin.
Step 4:
In this step I simply show the orientation of the two nipples before permanently attaching them. The Medela will sit over the the inverted Evenflo. Inverted being a key word here. Be sure to turn the Evenflo completely inside out before siliconing them together. There will be an obvious ridge(on the Evenflo) that the Medela nipple rests on. You will notice that I have two photos that look similar here. They show that I cut the tip of the Evenflo slightly lower in one of them. This can be helpful when adding a deeper concave section which I will describe later, so be sure to always read ahead. :]
Add the silicon in stages. It will honestly make this simpler. Start by adding the silicon sealant to the section around the out side of the Evenflo nipple but inside Medela. its pretty easy to do, try to not have too many bubble or air gaps. It will need to cure for at least 12-24 hours after, so be patient before starting the next step.
Step 6:
Here we finally use the spoon! It is an important tool. Add a healthy amount of silicon inside the Medela, but not into the tip of the Evenflo(its ok if some get in). Then use the spoon to spread and sculpt the silicon sealant to form a very nice concave dome like depression inside of the Medela. Take your time! Silicone sealants cure slowly, so you have plenty of time to sculpt. If you like you can forgo the concave depression and make it flat across the top, but in my experience it is more comfortable this way. It will also better facilitate the use of most sports ball needles, as they are typically too short to fit all the way in if you do not add the concave depression. Again, let the silicon sealant cure for 12-24 hours.
Step 7:
Almost done! Now invert the Medela nipple over the Evenflo, and fill the inside of the Evenflo with silicon sealant. If you like you can make it flat on top, but I choose to make it more dome like, by shaping the silicon sealant with the spoon and making the top slightly convex. Again it is up to you, but I felt this made its look a bit more natural when wearing. And again allow the silicon cure for 12-24 hours.
Step 8:
This last photo was taken quite a while after the others so the color matching is not even close, sorry. This is a really important step though, and I suggest it for both this version of the device and the one from Step 2b. If you compare this photo to the photo from Step 6 you will notice the only difference is that silicon as been added around the outside of the Medela's edge. This really makes the device so much more comfortable for long term wear. I usually do this in two short steps. First add silicon sealant to the outer edge of the Medela. Then use the handle of the spoon to scrape and smooth away, creating as close as you can, a clean and smooth outer edge that lines up seamlessly with the rest of the Medela nipple. Wipe away any excess silicon that has built up on the surface of the Medela outside of the ridge we are filling/shaping. (I have noticed that adding silicon to this area and wiping it off before it cures, adds a grippier texture to the outside of the Medela.) It is ok if it doesn't come out perfect the first time. Let it cure for 12-24 hours, then do this again. If needed cut off any excess cured silicon with scissors. Be sure to fill in any gaps, bubbles, or divots with silicon. Re-smooth the outer surface and shape it to align cleanly/seamlessly with the outer edge of the Medela. Then, again let it cure for 12-24 hours.
At this point you are pretty much done. You might be thinking, "what about the hole for the pump?" Don't worry, this part is easy. Take a long thick needle and push it through the center of the device starting at the top. Push through the top dome and through the tip of the Evenfo that is completely covered in silicon, and out through the concave bottom That will be enough to create the pilot hole for the pump needle.
*Over time this hole may/will begin to widen, tear, and leak air. This is not a huge issue. To fix this, you will simply take the same needle. Dip the needle in silicon sealant, and push it through the hole. Repeat this several times until the hole is coated with silicon. Then let it dry for 12-24 hours. And now its as good as new! Sorta. you just need to recreate the pilot hole for the pump needle.

DeleteI recreated your device but didn't care for the manner in how to inflate it.... so I have made mine have a threaded valve in which a pocket pump screws on. Truly it is very comfortable to wear all day thank you for the instructions.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeletethe instructional video isn´t online anymore.
Can you re-upload it?
I would like to know how to use the contraption and how exactly it will look like after step 2b.
While I followed your instructions, and successfully made the device, I was inspired to make a couple of modifications. First, I omitted the silicone, and used a one way aquarium valve inserted in the necks of the two nipples. Makes a leak-proof seal. As time went on and the diameter of my skin tube stretched, I found it harder to keep it inflated....so I siliconed an oring to the outer edge of the inner nipple....the one you filled with silicone. (I used an o-ring from an automotive halogen headlamp bulb)) This allowed a better seal when the outer nipple is dropped down onto the skin tube. Very comfortable, and I have been able to achieve great results.
